When the EPA placed stricter standards on three-quarter-ton and larger pickup trucks, automotive manufacturers were forced to come up with ways to cut down nitrogen oxide levels. They managed not only to do this but also to manufacture vehicles with more power and torque than ever. A major contributor to this advancement was the use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Most SCR systems use diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), which is a mixture of urea and deionized water, sprayed into the exhaust stream to break down the nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and water. By introducing fluid into the exhaust, the manufacturer is free to build as much power as it wants.

Logistics of Using DEF

Diesel exhaust fluid is typically made from 2/3 deionized water and 1/3 urea. Although urea is derived from the by-products of urine, a synthetic version is made so that no animals are harmed in the production of the fluid. When using DEF, and depending on how much you are hauling, your vehicle will use approximately 2.5 gallons for every 800 or so miles of travel. Depending on the model of truck you drive, your DEF gauge can appear as like a fuel gauge, a digital indicator, or a low fluid warning light.

DEF has become readily available in a variety of places, from truck stops that sell it in multi-gallon containers or at the pump to Walmart or an automotive store.
