How clean is the oil in your equipment?

Path of oil from refinery to its operating equipment.

The journey that water takes to get to our glass is a very complex process. This process includes a large industrial facility that cleans our water. Then, pumps take the clean water through pipes that flow into our houses and finally into our glass through a faucet. In each step of the process, there is potential for contamination to our water. Keeping contaminants out of our water prevents those contaminants from entering our body. Removing these water contaminants is often accomplished through our own household filters.

What exactly does clean drinking water have to do with oil cleanliness?

Whether it’s our vehicles, the large construction equipment, or power generation plants, the oil in those machines is very much like that water. The oil is the lifeblood of the machinery and it must be clean in order to function optimally. Similarly to water, oil must travel through a complex process to reach the equipment.

The oil travels from a refinery to a blending facility to a distribution warehouse, in and out of trucks traveling on the road, into a storage facility or tank before finally making it into the equipment. In every step of this process, the oil is picking up contaminants like dust, debris or even water.  Just like we need clean water for our health, we need clean oil to keep equipment healthy.

In order to maintain equipment health, it’s important to understand how the contaminants in your new oil can impact the reliability and life of your equipment. Particulate contamination in oil is the leading cause of component wear and failures in hydraulics and other lubricated components. Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEMs) recognize this and make cleanliness recommendations for operating conditions in their machines. However, it’s up to the operators of the equipment to ensure these oil cleanliness recommendations are adhered to for optimal performance and longevity of the equipment.

New oil does not equal clean oil. So how do you ensure you are using clean oil in your equipment?
