GM Dexos1™ Gen 3: Raising Oil Specifications

General Motors (GM) has introduced a new global engine oil specification, Dexos1™ Gen 3, designed to improve performance, enhance oxidation, and meet improved engine cleanliness standards.

In correspondence to this, DuraMAX products have been upgraded to meet the standards of this new specification.

What This Means:

Engine oil specifications are put in place and updated to set the standard for safe-use engine oil. Heat, friction and stress on the engine can cause damage to internal parts and lead to costly upkeep. The formulation of licensed products is intended to combat and reduce damage and wear on moving parts. Using oil that is compatible and safe for your vehicle provides effective lubrication, protection to engine components and ultimately extended oil life.

Licensed VS. Unlicensed Products:

GM conducts a testing process to determine which products meet the set standard of lubrication performance. Licensed products have been approved by GM through this testing, while unlicensed products, most likely, have not gone through testing, are not approved, and are not recommended for use in GM motors. Unlicensed products are not guaranteed to meet the same quality standards and may cause unwanted deposits, sludge or even engine failure over time. This is why licensed products are highly recommended and can be trusted with your engine. How can you tell the difference between licensed and unlicensed? GM can help.

“There are many authentic licensed dexos® products readily available at retail outlets, service repair shops, quick lube operations, and GM service centers. dexos® licensed products are easy to identify. Simply look for the dexos® icon on the front label and the 11 digit alphanumeric dexos® license number on the back label. Unless an oil package displays these two markings, the engine oil is not an authentic, licensed dexos® product and is not recommended for use in GM vehicles.”
